Death in the Workplace

You are here: Home / Practice Areas / Workers’ Compensation Lawyers / Death in the Workplace

Massachusetts employees are fatally injured every year on the job as a result of unsafe conditions, work-related illnesses, violence, and a host of other dangers. While a decedent’s family struggles with the loss of a loved one, intense financial burdens such as unpaid bills, funeral costs, and daily expenses pile up. This is when it is most critical to have a Keches Law attorney at your side: a dedicated advocate who can fight for real relief that will make a real difference during an emotionally enduring time.

Sadly, over the summer, two workers lost their lives while working in Taunton; a Union Iron Worker lost his life while working at Logan airport; a Union Laborer lost his life when a hole he was working in collapsed in Longmeadow; and another Union Iron Worker lost his life while on a job site in Somerville. While these examples do reveal the dangers of a job site, they are also graphic reminders that people are putting their lives on the line every day at work.

According to a 2015 report by the Massachusetts AFL-CIO and the Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health, 50 Massachusetts’ workers died on the job last year. Most (approximately 35%) of work-related deaths occur, however, on the road, while in a vehicle. Other leading causes are slip and falls, occupational illness, death caused by contact with equipment, and violence. On average, the state of Massachusetts will lose one employee per week due to unsafe work conditions.

Are You a Survivor of a Workplace Fatality?

Losing a loved one is never easy. It’s emotionally and financially devastating on the family. That is why Massachusetts workers’ compensation law provides statutory safe-nets for victim’s family members. Surviving spouses and/or the children of the deceased worker are able to file a workers’ compensation claim in order to receive financial relief for their loss. Victims of a deceased family member are also entitled to burial expenses of up to $4,000.00, as well as a range of other benefits that an experienced workers’ compensation attorney can advise on.

If you or someone you know has lost a loved one due to a work-related accident, make sure that you know your rights under the law, and you have someone fighting for them. Contact Keches Law Group at 617-898-0808 or online for a free, no-obligations consultation today.
