Medford Workers’ Compensation

You are here: Home / Communities Served / Medford Workers’ Compensation

Medford is a city located in the Middlesex County of Massachusetts. It is situated along the Mystic River, and is approximately 3 miles northwest of downtown Boston. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Medford’s population was 56,173; according to the American Community Survey 5-year estimates, it grew to 56,981 in 2014. Medford is the home of Tufts University, a private research university; Tufts ranked 15th among Research Universities (the undergraduate school ranked 24th) on the Forbes list of America’s Top Colleges in 2015.

Medford and the surrounding towns and cities in Massachusetts employ 2,587,770 workers. Of those workers, the Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations sector employs 174,450 workers, and the Healthcare Support Occupations sector employs 75,890 workers. This sector includes Registered Nurses, of which there are 59,660 in Medford and the surrounding area. Registered Nursing is the second largest specific job/occupation in the area. Other occupations in this sector include:

  • Physician Assistants
  • Nurse Practitioners
  • Medical and Clinical Laboratory Technologists
  • Radiologic Technicians
  • Psychiatric Aides
  • Orderlies

Medford and the surrounding towns and cities in Massachusetts boast an incredible population of health care workers, including doctors educated at Tufts Medical School right in Medford. These workers are of the utmost importance in keeping the rest of the population healthy and injury-free; however, workplace injuries are a common occurrence among members of this occupational sector, and they, too, need treatment and care.

Medford Workers Risk Injuries At Work

A news release by The Bureau Of Labor Statistics reported that there were 164,440 incidents of injury or illness nationwide that resulted in days away from work in healthcare and social assistance occupations. Healthcare and social assistance had a rate of 121.3 cases per 10,000 full-time workers, the highest among the private industry sectors with greater than 100,000 cases. Of those affected, 26,830 were injured or ill registered nurses, and 39,020 were injured or ill nursing assistants.

Were You Hurt At Work?

Working in Healthcare Practitioner and Technical Occupations or Healthcare Support occupational sector can pose risks to employees. There are many causes of injury and illness at work, and many of the most common causes are due to unavoidable hazards in the workplace, exposure to certain stressors (once or repetitively over time), or simply an unexpected accident. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, overexertion and bodily reaction were the most common cause of injury in the workplace in 2014, with 384,260 cases accounting for 33% of total cases. The 2014 incidence rate for overexertion or bodily reaction was 35.6 cases per 10,000 full-time workers. Falls, slips, and/or trips accounted for an additional 27 percent of the total in 2014, with 316,650 injuries that resulted in time away from work at an incidence rate of 29.3. Lost time at work means less money, and health care workers are forced to wonder how they will pay their medical bills or other financial obligations.
