Fall River is a city in the Bristol County of Massachusetts. According to the United States Census Bureau, the population in 2014 was estimated to be 88,756, making it the tenth largest city in the state of Massachusetts. Fall River is known for its history in textile mills thanks, in part, to The Quequechan River, which once flowed through Fall River without restriction. It provided water power for the mills which the city became known for. Fall River was once the only city on the East Coast of the United States of America to have a downtown-located, exposed waterfall. The Quequechan River’s eight falls is where Fall River got its name; its powerful falls made it the perfect watercourse for industrialization.
In modern day, the textile mills are a distant memory. However, the city is still thriving. Fall River and the surrounding towns and cities in Massachusetts and Rhode Island have about 551,850 workers employed in various occupational sectors. Of those workers, 88,800 are employed in office and administrative support occupations, 57,560 are in food preparation and serving related occupations, and 57,200 are in sales and related occupations. Healthcare practitioners and technical occupations, in addition to healthcare support occupations, employ a total of 59,780 workers, including 13,720 Registered Nurses and 10,460 nursing assistants.
Fall River Workers Could Be At Risk
A news release by The Bureau Of Labor Statistics reported that there were 164,440 incidents of injury or illness nationwide that resulted in days away from work in the healthcare and social assistance occupation. Additionally, healthcare and social assistance had a rate of 121.3 cases per 10,000 full-time workers, the highest among the private industry sectors with greater than 100,000 cases. These incidents include 26,830 injured or ill registered nurses, and 39,020 injured or ill nursing assistants. Considering that these two occupations top the list of largest occupations in the area, this is a significant issue for healthcare workers to consider.
