Boston Calls for Lower Speed Limits to Reduce Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents

You are here: Home / News / Boston Calls for Lower Speed Limits to Reduce Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents

April 29, 2019 //  by Keches Law

In 2017, Boston speed limits were reduced from 30 mph to 25 mph in an effort to minimize traffic, accidents, and fatalities throughout the major city. Two years later, Mayor Walsh is determined that reinstating a speed limit of 20mph throughout the city will bring them even closer to their goal. Statistics back up Mayor Walsh, and if the state can support his proposal, we can trust that Boston will become a safer place.  Studies show we can expect a 17% less fatal motor vehicle accidents or injury following the potential change in speed.

Fatal Accident Statistics

When speed limits were reduced to 25 mph in Boston, drivers exceeding 35 mph fell by nearly 30%. Drivers exceeding 30 mph fell by almost 10%. Studies show that there’s a 79% chance of fatal injury occurring from a vehicle traveling 40 mph.  The chance reduces to 17% traveling at 20 mph.

If a 20 mph speed limit can convince all drivers to travel below 30 mph, serious and fatal crashes may disappear altogether. Although, Boston is far from hitting its Vision Zero goal by 2030. In 2017, the fatal accident count in the city surpassed 20.  The number of pedestrians involved in fatal motor vehicle accidents in Boston equals the amount across the state.

Safety Matters

Whether the numbers continue to rise or fall, safety is important. If you’re walking or biking, heed protocol, and wait for the appropriate moment to cross the street. If you’re driving, remember to do so defensively, and be aware of what’s around you. While motor vehicle accidents persist to occur, it’s essential to know how to protect yourself.
