Bridgewater is a town located in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. It is situated about 25 miles south of Boston and 35 miles north of Providence, Rhode Island. The town has a population of around 28,000 people and covers an area of approximately 28 square miles.
The town of Bridgewater has a rich history, dating back to its incorporation in 1656. It was originally known as Saughtucket, which means “place of the great hill” in the Wampanoag language. The town played a significant role in the American Revolution and was home to the first normal school in the United States, now known as Bridgewater State University. A “normal school” (derived from the French phrase “ecoles normale”) was a school were where teaching was elevated to a profession due to a Massachusetts law passed in 1838 which allowed schools to be established solely for the purpose of training students to become teachers. Today, Bridgewater is a bustling suburban community with a diverse economy that includes manufacturing, retail, and service industries.
